The Brush Type 2s have arrived at Hornby TT:120, and this newly tooled BR Class 30 D5502 is just one highly detailed example of this exciting Class. DCC sound-fitted, D5502 is depicted in BR Green with duck egg blue stripes.
These locomotives were originally known as Brush Type 2s, designed for service on the Eastern Region where they handled both passenger and freight trains. Between 1957 and 1962, 263 examples were built, originally fitted with Mirrlees power units. A total of 40 Type 2 locomotives, including D5502 in the first batch of 20, were built with headcode disc-mounted nose ends and no headcode panel above the cab, earning them the nickname of ‘skinheads’. Outshopped in 1957 in BR Green livery with duck egg blue bodyside stripes unique to the first 20, D5502, like the rest of the Brush Type 2 fleet, was initially built with a Mirrlees engine, which is what our model depicts.
However it soon became apparent this engine was unreliable, so the entire class went through a reengining programme between 1965 and 1969, replacing the Mirrless with a English Electric power unit. During TOPS the fleet was designated as the Class 31, and although no Mirrlees-engined Type 2 lasted long enough to be a part of the renumbering scheme, it is generally acknowledged the early engine type is known as the Class 30. D5502 was renumbered to 31002 and was withdrawn in January 1980.
