This book is not an attempt to write the history of the fifty period since 1972. It has a huge magnitude to cover. What it has sought to document were important events in the tumultous half century, when Ferdinand Marcos touched the nerve of history, declared martial law, established one-man rule, and took the authoritarian route. It was ''constitutional authoritarianism,' Marcos said. With or without a constitution to back it, it was authoritarianism, plain and simple. The authoritarian experiment lasted 13 years under Marcos until it collapsed in the fateful 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, triggering the subsequent return to democracy. There was no other choice but to return to democracy. IT was the only choice.
