What a wonderful little item; it is a fine 1890 postecard entirely in the hand of C. H. Spurgeon and written to famous journalist, W. T. Stead. Stead was warmly evangelical, personally pressing the case that the age of consent should be raised from 13 to 16 [in 1885], covering the Welsh Revival and spreading news of it through his journalistic endeavours, etc., He died on the Titanic in 1912.
It reads as follows:
Menton. Dec 28, 1890.
Dear Sir,
Your wonderful collection of portraits & autographs has much interested me, & others to whom I have shown it. I thank you much for sending it to me here. It has taken me long to get out of the "submerged tenth" condition, & now I have escaped the flood of pain. I shall climb the hill of strength, then get back to work.
Yours with compliments of the season,
C. H. Spurgeon
