When your horse needs a bit more guidance than a standard snaffle but isn't ready for the severity of a gag, the Shires Beval Bit With French Link is the ultimate bridge. Designed for riders who value a soft hand but need that extra "lift" in the arena or out on the cross-country course, this bit offers a sophisticated level of communication that respects your horse's mouth.
Crafted from high-quality stainless steel, this Shires bit combines the versatility of the Beval ring design with the proven comfort of a French link mouthpiece. It’s a staple in our tack rooms for schooling green horses and refining the outline of stronger ponies, providing just enough poll pressure to encourage rounding without causing distress.
Showjumpers, Eventers, and Pony Club riders looking for added control and lift in a bit that remains gentle on the tongue and bars.
Generally, no. Because the Beval is a multi-ring bit that offers mild leverage and poll pressure, it is typically prohibited in the Dressage ring. However, it is widely accepted and very popular for Showjumping, Eventing (XC and Stadium), and most schooling shows.
Because the Shires Beval Bit functions like a loose-ring bit, the rings move through the mouthpiece. We highly recommend sizing up by 0.5" (approx. 12mm) from your horse's standard fixed-ring size to prevent the moving rings from pinching the corners of the lips. You should aim for about 1/4" of clearance on each side.
The French Link is a double-jointed design that follows the contours of the horse's mouth. Unlike a single-jointed bit that can poke the roof of the mouth, the French Link stays flat, distributing pressure evenly across the tongue and bars for a much kinder feel.
