Old Silver Touareg Cross

In excellent condition, a hand-engraved silver Touareg cross from the Bellah indigenous black community of southwest Mali. Such a cross was worn either as a pendant around the neck, sewn into clothing or pinned in the hair. The upper area of the cross is representative of “Sky” (grandfather, father, brother and their material world), and the lower area representative of “Earth” (the domain of female relations and everyday objects). This fine piece is nearly a century old.
