An excellent set of the sermons of Samuel Davies [1723-1761], a key figure in the Great Awakening. He was known as the "Apostle of Virginia" for leading powerful revivals, promoting religious liberty, and pioneering missionary work among enslaved people. Later in life, he succeeded Jonathan Edwards as President of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton).

Edwards early on recognized Davies' work, calling his ministry in Virginia a "remarkable work of conviction and conversion," and praising his work in both white and black communities. Edwards himself exerted his influence in the placement of Davies as his successor in the presidential role at Princeton after his death.

Very good condition in smart late 20th century linen bindings; each volume inscribed by Ann L. Butler, 1820, and very discrete excisions from the head of the titles, likely for another signature or removing an institutional mark. Else very clean, crisp and solid with usual minor toning, light foxing, and handling.
