This is a copy of the original Tradesmen’s Token, first issued in 1862. Struck in sterling silver as a special souvenir for tourists at Sovereign Hill, it celebrates Australia’s rich colonial history and the legacy of the Criterion Drapery Establishment. The obverse is text-only, featuring Latin script lettering: CRITERION DRAPERY ESTABLISHMENT, DAVID JONES, IMPORTER, BALLAARAT, ESTAB: 1853, WHOLESALE & RETAIL. The reverse depicts the David Jones building in Ballarat, with lettering: CRITERION HOUSE, STURT ST, BALLAARAT, 1862, DAVID JONES PROPRIETOR.
With a mintage of 500 pieces, this example is number 128, indicated by the edge lettering. It combines historical charm with the appeal of a finely crafted modern commemorative token, offering a tangible connection to Australia’s 19th-century commercial heritage.
